Choosing our candidate

How our next candidate will be chosen

We would like whoever stands for Sturt to be chosen by this community, through a process that anyone can follow from start to finish.

Why the process matters

A community independent is only as strong as the way they were chosen. If the person who stands for Sturt is going to say with confidence that they answer to the people who live here, it helps a great deal if those same people could see how the choice was made, and had the chance to shape it.

That is why we are taking the time to set the process out clearly before anyone is asked to put their hand up, rather than settling on someone first and explaining it afterwards.

Three stages

  1. 1

    We listen first

Our community consultation will ask people across Sturt what matters most to them. What we hear will shape the priorities our candidate is asked to represent, and the qualities we look for in the person who represents them.

  2. 2

Anyone can put their hand up

Nominations will be open to anyone who shares those priorities and would like to represent Sturt. You don't need to have been involved with the Project, a political party or a previous campaign to be considered.

  3. 3

    A selection panel decides

Everyone who nominates will be assessed against criteria published in advance, by a selection panel that is independent of any political party or donor, so that each person is considered on the same basis and on their own merits.

    To follow

Before nominations open, we will share the full details here, including the selection criteria, how the panel will work and the timeline.

Thinking about standing?

If you are considering putting your hand up, or would simply like to know more about what's involved, you are welcome to register your interest now. It isn't an application, and it simply means we will let you know as soon as the process opens.

Help shape the priorities

The consultation is where this all begins, so the more people across Sturt who take part, the better the result will be. You can share a policy idea with us now, or sign up to hear when the consultation opens.
